SAVIRU JEEWA DRYERS

for Spices and Other products

SAVIRU JEEWA dryers are an innovative design in spice drying. This series of dryers have been developed by AfATE (Alliance for Appropriate Technology Exchange) after one year of research and development work supported by the National Agribusiness Council. The drying system consists of a drying cabinet carrying a large number of trays (size - 2ft x 3 ft), a fan that circulates air through the cabinet to enhance the drying process, an external hot air generator heated by an innovative wood burner, a temperature indicator/controller.

The heart of the new design is a compact wood burner that burns 2-3 inches long Gliricidia pieces continuously and without smoke at a constant rate ensuring easy control of dryer temperature. Depending on the size, the burners consume 4-8 kg of wood pieces per hour producing 15-33 kW of heat. The heating rate of the burner entirely depends on its design and not on how it is operated. The large fuel hopper on the burner can carry enough fuel for one hour or more.

A temperature controller is provided on the dryer. This controller can be set to operate at the desired maximum temperature. The controller works by cutting off the hot air supply to the dryer as the set temperature is reached. Therefore, the dryer can run automatically at the set temperature without an operator.

This new drying technology utilizes Giricidia sticks, an abundant local biomass resource as the fuel and thus offers both environmental benefits and low operating cost. The technology also augers well with the national policy of promoting Gliricidia as the local fuel of the future.

This dryer is presently available in three models.
