SEED PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION OF SRI LANKA

Inaugurated on the 4th of April 1995, with assistance of CARE international having 17 founder members. The current membership has grown to 63, with all the leading seed producers in the country have obtain membership, these include CIC, Hayleys, Lankem, Best Seeds, Ceylon Agro Industries, Ceylon Agro Development Company others include Companies, Cooperative Societies, Farmer Organizations and individual farmers.

OUR VISION

To make Sri Lanka self sufficient in seed paddy and vegetable seed and planting material

MISSION

Work together with the government to produce, process, certify and distribute the seed and planting material to farmers

Objectives

• To educate the farmers in the use of good quality seed
• Work hand in hand with the ministry and the department of agriculture in producing, processing and distribution of seed among the farmers
• Train the members in seed production activities
• To raise the standard of life of the farming community by increasing productivity
• The consumer at the end will benefit by obtaining rice and vegetable at a reasonably lower price due to the higher yields obtain by the farmer
• Disseminate latest agriculture know how to the farming community by the association, biannual seed bulletin “Saubhagya”
With the initial assistance of CARE international (up to 1997) and subsequent assistant form AgEnt (since 1997) SPASL grew in membership and capabilities of the membership resulting in the four tomes seed paddy production and five times the vegetable seeds production of the department of agriculture.

Achievements

1. Was a member of the National Seed Policy and Seed Law preparation team
2. Member of the Asia Pacific Seed Association based in Thailand
3. Membership collectively produces 350,000 bushels of seed paddy and 65,000 kg of Vegetable seed per year.
